Geography & Climate

The province is situated north of Hunan. Sichuan province lies to the west of Hubei with border provinces of Henan to the north, Jiangxi to the southeast, Anhui to the east, shaanxi to the north west and chongqing municipality to the west.

Hubei has a humid subtropical climate with mild winters and warm wet summers. The typical January temperature is 2-8 degrees celsius and around 28 degrees in July.

Job Opportunities

The provincial capital, Wuhan is a great city to start TEFL teaching in China with a large number of schools, colleges and kindergartens looking to hire passionate western TEFL teachers to teach English as a second language. Other cities with TEFL vacancies are Xianning, Jingmen, Tianmen and Suizhou. Pay rates in the smaller cities are excellent in comparison to their highly affordable cost of living.

Things to see and do in Hubei

The three gorges dam is a highly recommended sight to take in Hubei. A great way to see the dam up close is to take a sailing tour around the stretch of river by the dam. The three gorges scenic area stretches between Yichang and Chongqing and the dam gets its name for the three gorges it covers in this stretch. Additionally sights are East lake and the Yellow Crane tower.

Food and drink

Hubei cuisine is hot and spicy. Influenced by its provincial neighbor provinces in Sichuan and Hunan many of the areas dishes are spicy. The dishes use dried hot pepper, black pepper and a mixture of other spices to really add bite to their noodles, soups and stir fry dishes.
